• OLD ANKLE INJURY

Posted by LAK on May 11, 2025 at 5:29 pm

    Hey B/Daniel,

I had an ankle injury many years ago (sprained ankle) which as followed by another injury a year later which I think caused a bone bruising. After several xray that showed nothing, I asked for an MRI last year and that showed I had an osteochondral injury involving the tibia. All three doctors recommend I continue walking and my weight training and if I felt pain to back off.

I recently saw another doctor who asked for an MRI which mentioned the following

    1. Sprain of the medial collateral (deltoid) ligament complex.

    2. Mild ankle joint effusion.

    3. Osteochondral defect involving the articular surface of the distal tibia with underlying focal subchondral degenerative cystic changes.

He asked me to completely lay off my foot for at least 6 weeks and even recommended a cast for this time to allow the bone to heal if it does. Due to travel I cant at the moment so we discussed the option of crutches and now I am thinking of getting a boot or ankle brace to support me until after summer when I potentially consider putting a cast.

Do you have any recommendations on ankle brace or boot and any thoughts on the above would be appreciated.

In terms of supplements, I take vitamin d (90 level), omega 3, magnesium 600mg, glucosamine/MSM, collagen jelly.

    Thanks

    Lana

@LAK a walking boot with crutches is a great compromise. It will help reduce stress on the joint while still giving you some mobility. I don’t think an ankle brace will be enough to support proper healing in this case, especially given the bone involvement.

Please take a look at this protocol for healing broken bones to help support your current supplement regimen, which is a good start. Make sure your vitamin D3 has K2 in it to help get calcium into the bones.

Another option which I think is worth considering is prolotherapy and PRP or stem cell therapy. I had chronic ligament instability in my neck, and prolotherapy was a game changer. It involves injecting a natural irritant (usually dextrose) into ligaments, tendons, or joint spaces to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. This promotes collagen production and tissue repair especially in areas with poor blood supply like the ligaments so it might be helpful.

I highly recommend a consultation with Dr. Suad Trebinjac at HMS Al Garhoud Private Hospital. He works in Al Ain but visits the hospital in Dubai on Sundays. He’ll be able to tell you if prolotherapy is a good option for you, and which type.

      Morning B,

Thank you for your response. Yes I guess the boot with the crutches will give me some flexibility and hopefully this will support the healing process. In my research I found that even swimming isn’t a sport I should be doing during this off loading period – Would you agree with this?

I saw you protocol as I had used it for my daughter, and have pretty much started aside from bone meal powder which I cant find, manganese (for the amount you noted I can’t seem to find either).

Vitamin A is safe to take for a few month?

As for vitamin D, my levels are really good and I take vitamin K2 MK-4 only as I cant find one that has MK -7 as well.

the glucosamine that I take (Thorne brand) has turmeric in it already which helps.

I made an appointment with the Dr so thank you for the recommendation. At this stage I want to do anything that I can to avoid any issues later on.

I have been doing red light therapy/NIR daily as well and looking into NMES. Do you have any advise on this treatment?

      Thank you!

@LAK swimming is actually a way to help keep strength and mobility without impact, so unless otherwise stated by your doctor, this would actually be a beneficial activity.

As for bone meal powder, this product can be an option.

Love the addition of red light. Sounds like you’re really on top of it. As for NMES – I’m assuming this stands for Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation? If so, then yes this can also be a helpful therapy as well. And since you’re going to see Dr. Trebinjac, I would also get his opinion on everything you’re doing since this is his specialty as a sports injury doctor.

Thank you, yes I am looking forward to getting his opinion on this and what he can do to help.

          Thanks again for your help
